We recently posted about how Visual Studio for Mac is supporting Apple Silicon / M1 architecture through the Rosetta translation layer starting in version 8.9, and we’re working towards native support. We’ve been using and testing with M1 Macs, but it’s always great to hear how.NET and Visual Studio for Mac are working for our customers in the real world.

Setting up the environment

  1. Android Emulator & Studio works but performances are bad on Apple M1.Let's test the working beta version of Android Emulator based on Apple M1 and the intel.
  2. The Internet giant Google has an emulator presented, which makes running Android applications on the latest Mac generation consisting of Mac Mini, Macbook Pro 13 inch Macbook Air and possible. The decisive factor here is Apple’s new System-on-a-Chip (SoC) M1 based on ARM. In contrast, the emulator will not work on Apple devices that are still.
  3. I actually got an M1 and didn't think it would work. But Android Studio stable runs perfectly fine and the new emulator works really fast as well. I don't know if I can tell if it's running on rosetta (I was never prompted to install rosetta), but everything seemed to just work fine.
  4. The emulator runs on the new Mac Mini, Macbook Pro and Macbook Air with Apple's M1 chip. The application does not work on Apple products with Intel SoCs. The emulator can be used to run ARM64-based Android apps on a Mac. The native hardware virtualization of the M1 SoCs is used via Qemu.

Setup for iOS needs:

  • Node (with NVM)
  • Watchman brew install watchman
  • Xcode (install from the App Store)
  • Xcode Command Line Tools xcode-select --install
  • Accept the Software License for Xcode sudo xcodebuild -license. It'll prompt you anyway when you run Xcode for the first time.
  • CocoaPods sudo gem install cocoapods

Homebrew

Install Homebrew if you don't have it installed already

Node LTS with NVM

iOS

  • Open Terminal / iTerm with Rosetta (Get Info > Open using Rosetta)
  • Prefix the CocoaPods related commands with arch -x86_64

Android

Macbook Pro M1 Android Emulator Windows 10

  • Install JDK 8 brew install --cask adoptopenjdk/openjdk/adoptopenjdk8
  • Install Android Studio
  • Install Android Emulator for M1

Macbook Pro M1 Android Emulator Software

Macbook

The Android Emulator doesn't work out of the box yet. Luckily, there is a Preview build by Google that supports Apple Silicon M1 chip based MacBooks. You'll have to download and install it separately. Most things work.

Troubleshooting

  • command not found for brew or nvm. Make sure you have a ~/.zshrc file. On a fresh new M1 MacBook, there is no ~/.zshrc or ~/.zprofile created and the $PATH doesn't get updated because of it. Create a ~/.zshrc file and run the commands to install Homebrew and NVM again.

Add this to you Podfile

Two options:

  • Run on a different port react-native start --port=8088
  • OR find out what program is using 8081 sudo lsof -i :8081 and kill it kill -9 1234

incorrect architecture 'x86_64' errors

add this to the Podfile

run pod install afterwards
